Beware of food containing sugar substitutes and keep them away from your pets. Xylitol, an artificial chemical sweetener used in many type of sugar-free cookies, chewing gum, toothpaste, and candy, can cause liver damage and low blood sugar in dogs.
Reported in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, it doesn't take that much xylitol to cause problem. According to the sutdy, a 22-pound dog who has ingested just one gram of this chemical sweetner should be treated by a vet.
