HALLOWEEN SAFETY FOR YOUR PETS

With Halloween just around corner, many of you are preparing for the fun weekend ahead!! But don’t forget about pet safety! Keep Halloween treats out of reach, don’t allow your dog to eat treats from strangers or things found on the ground. Candy is not OK for pets. Many people do not realize that theobromine (acti…ve ingredient in chocolate) is toxic to pets, as is Xylitol (found in sugarless gum and candy), and many other nuts and candies. If you feel your pet has ingested something inappropriate contact us immediately! (727)786-5755. Some foods that are considered good for people can be very dangerous for pets. The list highlights some of the most common foods that can be dangerous to animals.

HEAT STROKE

This is the time of year that we see Heat Stroke. The Spring and Fall are the most common times because the temperature and humidity are changing. People and their pets do not realize how hot it really is. Not only can pets succumb to heat stroke in locked cars or confined spaces, but they can also suffer frome heat stroke due to overactivity. I have seen dogs literally run themselves to death. They try to keep running to please their owner and die trying. Signs of heat stroke are excessive panting, feeling warm to the touch, being disoriented, and collapse. A dog’s normal temperature should be no greater than 102.5. Anything above 105 is life threatening. Should you think your pet may be suffering from heat stroke first rinse him off with water and then get him to a veterinary facility ASAP. Just because his temperature has decreased does not mean he is out of the woods.

Bring your kids too because it’s really a blast for them. Visit the pet related vendors for lots of cool pet stuff. This year’s celebration will be held Friday evening (instead of Saturday morning) Feb. 12, 5:30 PM-8:30 PM., in Pioneer Park, Dunedin, FL. The Costume Judging & Main Street walk starts at 6:30 PM.
